Derrick Ernst Neighbourhood Centre

Running an LGBTQ+ parent playgroup is a powerful way to build community, foster inclusion, and create safe, affirming spaces for both parents and children. Playgroups with Pride at the Derrick Ernst Neighbourhood Centre (The DEN) offers a supportive environment where LGBTQ+ families can connect, share experiences, and find solidarity without fear of judgment. For their children, it’s a chance to grow up seeing diverse family structures as normal, celebrated, and valued. By holding space for these families, LGBTQ+ parent playgroups help strengthen bonds, reduce isolation, and promote acceptance and understanding in the wider community.

Playgroups with Pride currently partners with Gay Dads WA and Rainbow Families to create playgroups, family events, parenting information and programs, as well as support and advocacy around surrogacy and much more.

They have been involved in creating a survey for rainbow families for WA's LGBTQIA+ Inclusion Strategy Consultation, which provides an opportunity for rainbow family community groups to contribute input to develop a government strategy that reflects rainbow families' lived experiences and diverse needs. The consultation period ends in May 2025, with the proposed strategy launching in November 2025. The collective information from this survey will be shared with the WA State Government to help develop a strategy that supports the community and with WA rainbow family community groups to better understand their needs and what services to provide.
