Serpentine Jarrahdale Community Resource Centre’s Literacy Tutoring Program

Building Strong Foundations

Serpentine Jarrahdale Community Resource Centre (SJCRC) are more than a service hub – they are a lifeline for families across their 950 km Shire.

One of their most successful initiatives is the Early Learning Literacy Tutoring Program. Launched in Term 2 of 2025, it aims to bridge the gap in academic support for young students. With the rising cost of living and busy family schedules, many parents struggle to help with schoolwork or afford private tutoring. SJCRC responded with a high-quality, affordable literacy program, led by two qualified educators per class, focused on building foundational reading and comprehension skills.

The pilot program filled within 24 hours, with a growing waitlist confirming the urgent need for accessible tutoring in our region. Families pay a modest $110 per term, compared to $400 elsewhere, with sponsorship covering facilitator costs and basic resources. By 2026, we will be supporting 36 children weekly, offering real impact at a fraction of the cost.

Thanks to local sponsors, the program expanded in Terms 3 and 4 to run three concurrent programs. With small class sizes of six, the program delivers personalised attention and measurable outcomes. Results have been outstanding – one student improved from a D to a C in literacy in just one term, and all participants have shown academic growth, increased confidence, and new friendships.

Currently supporting children aged 6 to 9 years old, SJCRC plan to double their offering in 2026 to include students aged 10–13, ensuring broader support across age groups.

With proven results, low fees, and a sustainable model, the program does not add additional workload for Centre staff, and it creates a replicable blueprint for other CRCs across WA.
